Talk About Movies Galore

June 30th, 2011

We got an email today that there’s another morale event coming up next month, extremely similar to the Green Hornet one we had back in January. This time there’s about seven movies for us to choose from rather than just the one, but the headlining one (and one I’ll probably go see) is Captain America. I could wait a week and see Harry Potter, but if I’m gonna see both of these movies regardless, no sense in pointlessly delaying one of them.

One thing I forgot to mention about my Transformers outing was that the following trailer was shown before it. While I think I my opinion about the movie would have been the same anyway, this definitely set a good mood to start it off with. I’ll just let you watch the trailer and be as pleased as I was when I figured out what movie it was for.

Harry Potter Progress Tracker:

  Book Movie
Sorcerer’s Stone 6/19 6/19
Chamber of Secrets 6/20 6/21
Prisoner of Azkaban 6/22 6/22
Goblet of Fire 6/27 6/29
Order of the Phoenix Through Ch 11
Half-Blood Prince
Deathly Hallows

Shouldn’t Get Excited Yet

June 9th, 2011

The Mavs are close, but there’s still one more win that has to come in Miami before the celebration can happen. Five years ago should have taught everyone to not get too excited too early, so I’ll wait until Sunday night for a potential celebratory post. However, being up 3-2 does at least give people a reason to be optimistic at this point in time.

With the Wii U and PS Vita being shown off this week, it’s possible to lose sight of the fact that there are still some super anticipated games coming out for the current set of consoles. Take the PS3 and Uncharted 3, for instance. Sony showed off the first full trailer for the game, and with maybe the exception of Skyward Sword, I have to say that it’s probably my most anticipated game for 2011. Fortunately Bioshock Infinite isn’t coming out until 2012, so I don’t have to feel bad about having two games prioritized higher than it.

There’s a New OS in Town

June 1st, 2011

World, I’d like to introduce you to Windows 8.

We finally showed off Windows 8 for the first time today at D9, including its new UI designed to be touch friendly. For whatever reason there wasn’t a live video stream (although there were for other parts of the event), but Engadget and other sites had liveblogging fairly well covered. We posted a video of effectively the same demo online which is a part of the news story above as well as embedded for your easy viewing pleasure right here.

Anyone who thinks the tablet wars aren’t going to get much more interesting clearly isn’t paying attention. As much as I wanted an Android tablet for so many months, I think I’m willing to wait just a little while longer.

Time For Some Ultimate Afternoons

May 24th, 2011

Well, we didn’t win our first ultimate game today, but I can already tell that our team will be a whole lot better than we were last year. I completely expect us to win a game before the second to last week of the season and also do better than end up in last place in the league. Our next game isn’t for two weeks because of Memorial Day, so any muscles that scream at me tomorrow should have plenty of time to heal before I abuse them again.

The Windows Phone “Mango” event was today, and while nothing super revolutionary was announced that wasn’t already known, it just makes me want it more and more. for a (record?) 4th video in 4 days (because I did two one day), here’s the announcement video that Microsoft released. Again, not mind blowingly awesome, but it shows off the product and does a good job at generating interest. I mean, it got me interested, right?

Now That’s What I Call A Game

May 23rd, 2011

Mavs, you might not have deserved to win that one based on your performance up until the last 4:30, but after that, I don’t think anyone can claim you’re not deserving of getting back to the Finals. What made it even better is that I was watching it while I was out eating dinner, and Seattle people are still a little bitter at the Supersonics turning into the Thunder a couple years ago, so the aura was definitely in support of the Mavs. I’m sure watching it Dallas would have been many times more awesome, but I guess this is the best I’m going to do up here.

In general, I’m not a fan of “modern era” (meaning WW1 and newer) war type games. I either want something that’s super sci-fi (Unreal Tournament) or something rooted pretty much in fantasy/fiction (Turok 64 as an example). However, Activision has been onto something with the recent Call of Duty games, and the trailer that premiered during the Mavs game tonight for Modern Warfare 3 once again looks like it will be an insanely awesome game. Of course, I’ll hold off on buying it until I get around to beating the first two plus Black Ops, but the fact there’s any interest there at all is already saying something.

Getting Rid of Short Weekends

May 21st, 2011

Two day weekends are about to fall out of style in my life, but that’s a change I’m fine with. As a result of all my travelling in conjunction with Memorial Day and the 4th of July, four out of my next six weekends are at least three days long. Going back to normal length weekends afterwards is going to be difficult unless I can find a creative way to WFH on wither Mondays or Fridays on a regular basis.

I think it’s about time for another video, don’t you? Since it’s been so long, I’ll give you a double feature. These are the new Bing commercials to coincide with the Facebook linking that just got added. They might not be as memorable as some of the initial ones or the WP7 commercials, but that’s because they have a specific thing to show of rather than just get people interested in the product as a whole.

In The Name of Science

April 28th, 2011

As if this week needed to get better Portal 2 wise, Valve said today that DLC should be coming out this summer. Single player, co-op…I don’t care what type of DLC it is, I’ll buy it the first day it’s available (and probably beat it on the same). Even though it won’t really be a sequel/expansion, I might feel compelled to replay the game before it comes out if I don’t do it anyway before then. Who knows, I might even go back and do the original also if I can remember.

To celebrate the fact that I finally did an upgrade of WordPress (although no theme changes, so if I hadn’t told you about it, you would have never known), here’s a video from, what else, Portal 2. One of the most memorable parts of the original was the ending credits and the song “Still Alive” (which happens to be written by a regular at the PAX concerts, and I saw him perform it last year with Andrew). This is the ending to Portal 2 (so if you want to avoid any sort of spoilers, I suggest you don’t watch it), written by the same person.

Reaching for Another Game Completion

April 20th, 2011

As was in my plan, Halo: Reach took the spot of my next console game to play, and after starting it for the third time (apparently the autosave method in the Uncharted series spoiled me), I made some decent progress. Given enough dedication, I’d estimate that I can beat it by the end of the weekend, assuming my weekend activities don’t eat up too much time. After that I have quite a few games that I’d like to turn my energy to, but it’s all about knowing what the right one is at the time.

Weird Al announced his new (almost not) single today, which also means that the information for his new album should be coming out soon. Even with living in the digital age, his CDs are ones that I actually still buy physical versions of. For your viewing (or listening) pleasure, I give you the music version of his new single, “Perform This Way”.

Time To Think With Portals (Again)

April 18th, 2011

The ARG is over, and as we speak Portal 2 is decrypting on my hard drive. I could have been at this stage about two hours ago, but I had a concert to go to instead. One of the bands that played at the radio station concert back in December is doing their tour for their new album, and since I liked them at that, I figured I would also like this at this. Turns out I was right, just unfortunately at the expense of not getting to play Portal 2 quite as early as everyone else.

I feel like I could create a new category of “Music” or something, but since what I’m linking is a Youtube video, the “Videos” category works just as well. If there’s ever a time where I just link to a music player sans video then I may have to rethink this strategy, but I’m good for now. So, enjoy one of the their best known songs that I heard live tonight.

Seems Like a Pattern Exists

April 17th, 2011

Two Saturdays ago, scheduled post. Two Sundays ago, movie review. Last Saturday, scheduled post. Last Sunday, movie review. Yesterday, scheduled post. See where I’m going with this? Today’s movie of choice was Limitless, probably my favorite of the trio. Although I wasn’t a huge fan of the ending, it had the most “cohesive” and interesting plot of all three. That combined with the least amount of seeming unnecessary downtime made it keep my attention the best. My score: 8/10.

Even though this isn’t a scheduled post I still think you’re worthy of a video. A WP7 fan made a video a month or so ago, and it got the attention of Microsoft who had him make a second one that they showed off at MIX last week. In addition, they said that if the video got 200k views (not an unreasonable amount by Youtube standards), they would work with him to edit it and make a primetime TV ad out of it. Would Apple and/or Google ever extend that sort of offer? I think not.
