You Never Know What Will Happen

February 20th, 2012 @ 7:09 PM

So as I pointed out in my post yesterday, the only thing I intended on doing when I left my apartment at about 6:40 yesterday was going to dinner with Will for his brother’s birthday. Simple enough, right? I was then going to come back home, watch the premiere of The Amazing Race, and then get in some Mass Effect 2. My evening could not have been better planned out. Then at dinner we started talking about how some of our friends had been down in Portland at a LAN over the weekend, discussed some of the things they had been up to, and decided we were a little jealous. While going down to Portland would have been amusing, we just settled on going to a casino in the Seattle area since none of us had anything more important to do tonight.

Once we were in the car discussing options for the casino, various distances away, etc., we realized that with the exception of me, everyone had a holiday today, and even though I didn’t, my calendar was basically going to be a holiday anyway since other people on my team were taking the day off. I wasn’t the only one with “stuff” to do today though, but…there was enough time, right? Three hours down, three hours back…and we could find stuff to entertain ourselves down there. Hey, there are casinos in Portland as well, and we could even go see the sunrise on the coast if we wanted. Well, those latter plans got axed once we became geographically aware that 1) Portland isn’t that close to the coast, and 2) we’re on the west coast, so sunrises probably aren’t going to be that impressive. Just meant that instead of the 10:00 return we were budgeting, we actually got back while it was still dark, and I even managed a little bit of sleep before going into work. I’m not saying it was the best or smartest idea ever, and I’m not saying that I’d necessarily repeat it again (the entire trip in 9 hours part, not the impromptu departure), but it was definitely a unique trip.
