The Year of the Game of the Year Game Project
Over the past decade, I’m completely aware that I’ve missed out on what many people would consider to be some great games. Some of them are just because I never got around to playing them; others are because I actively passed on them. Well, in 2012, I’m seeking to remedy this hole in my gaming experiences. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you my “Year of the Game of the Year Game Project” (or, YotGotYGP for short).
The setup is this: I looked at the GotY awards from the major sites and made a list of all of them dating across the past decade. I threw out the ones I’d already played (or made non-trivial progress in), and looked at what remained. From there, if a game had been picked on more than one site, I added it to a list. As it turned out, I actually had played enough good games that I didn’t fill up my list, so I went to just the winners of Best Xbox/Playstation/Nintendo (insert console of the appropriate era) and completed my list from there.
So, the way the next year will work is as follows: each month I’m picking a game from the list, and I’ll be aiming to play and beat it in that calendar month. It will be the first new game that I start each month, and also my primary recipient of play time until I beat it. I’m fully free to play games not from the list throughout the month, and in fact, those will be what I play after I’ve beaten my monthly game. Should I ever not beat a game in a month, it’ll either be put on hold until I beat the next month’s game, or I’ll simply wrap it up before starting the next new one.
With the rules out of the way now, I’m sure you’re all just dying to know what games are on my list (if you haven’t already stopped reading because this plan is such a huge letdown from what you were expecting). Well, I’m not going to give you the list, because I’m reserving the right to rearrange and tweak it based on the results from the 2011 GotY awards.
