The Last and Final Test

May 11th, 2009

I can’t really say that I’m going to have to miss studying for tests in the future. I think my Comp Networks one went fine today, and with that, all I have to do is finish up the documentation for the P2P project. I believe this is the part of the year that is most definitely called the “final stretch”.

Since I have nothing to do tomorrow (except for finishing up the aforementioned project), I’m going to see Star Trek with my grandparents. Baseball is Thursday-Saturday this week, so I don’t even have that to do tomorrow evening. This week will ironically get a whole lot busier once the weekend comes around, but for now, I get to bask in the restfulness of school almost being over.

The Social Network Vaccum

May 10th, 2009

I signed up for another social network and installed its iPhone app this afternoon after having seen it advertised on both Apple and Sprint commercials for the past month or so (although I knew about it way before then). When I asked Andrew if he had ever used it, he hadn’t even ever heard of it but decided he wouldn’t be interested because he doesn’t “need people to be able to stalk [him] anymore than they already can”. I, however, am totally cool with the whole stalking thing, so consider that a green light if you want to go for it.

I got a 90 on my Comp Networks project, so as long as I can get an A (or very high B) on my test tomorrow, I shouldn’t have any problem getting an A in that class. The single thing that will make it interesting is the fact that for this test, we have no homework to act as a review/guide for what it is that we need to study. Is it odd that I almost wish we did have an extra homework assignment in that class now?

All Projects Must Come to an End

May 9th, 2009

For the P2P project, this couldn’t have come any sooner either. I finally added the last bit of functionality to the GUI earlier tonight, so now the only thing left is the documentation. Comparatively, doing that should be much less frustrating if not less work since writing is something that at least doesn’t require me to look up how to do anything new.

I’m also a week late with this review, but last Saturday I went to go see 17 Again. While it wasn’t a horrible movie, it wasn’t great by any standard either. I felt it channeling HSM quite a bit (especially since they actually had Zac Efron playing on his high school’s basketball team), but I just wan’t that impressed with it overall. Definitely not a purchase, and probably a movie that I’ll never see again except for once (if) it hits the network TV channels. My score: 5.5/10.

A Demonstration of the Completely (Il)Legal

May 8th, 2009

The demo of our P2P program went fairly well with just one or two weird things happening (but it wouldn’t be a true demo without some of those). Tomorrow I’m probably going to finish up the last part of the GUI that needs to be done, and then after that, the only remaining thing to do is the documentation. Even then, half of that is being handled by the other people in my group, so this should be wrapped up by Monday if everything goes well.

UIL decided that people could play sports again without fear of dying, so at 3:30 I learned about a game tonight which I’m currently at. After this is the senior party which was planned for two weeks ago, so this post is coming now in order to be on the safe side. That means I have to fight with my phone’s keyboard, but it’s a small price to pay in order to keep the streak alive.

No Rush Tomorrow Night

May 7th, 2009

For the first time in recent history, I’ve actually finished one of my projects significantly (read: more than 24 hours) before it’s due. My Comp Networks project is now in the completed (and submitted) pile, so all I have left is a test in there and then the final P2P project which is due next Tuesday. Our HP class exam period was fun today with all the food that people brought and showing off our projects, and it just so happens that it is the first class grade I received also. Of course it’s an A, but if there was ever a class that I wasn’t in any danger of not getting an A, that was it.

Tomorrow morning some people from the moving company are coming to do a survey of all my stuff that will be going up to Seattle, and then at 6:30 tomorrow night we have to give our final demo of our P2P project. It’s outside of our normal class time (which would typically also be our exam time) because our professor has another exam he is supposed to be giving at that time, and as he told the registrar’s office, he hasn’t invented “physical multithreading” yet. Don’t worry if you don’t get the joke, it just means that you haven’t spent four years going to school to get a CS degree.

Only a Virtual Fisherman

May 6th, 2009

So that I wouldn’t get totally burnt out on seeing new content in WoW, I decided to keep playing my main character but instead work on his fishing skill. Yes, I know exactly how that sounds, but it’s true. Actually, the only reason I worked on fishing was to level up my cooking which in turns lets be be more powerful for when I’m beating up on poor, defenseless enemies. See, everything I do has a purpose. Sometimes the purpose can be pretty opaque at first (and arguably even misguided at times), but it’s still there.

Tomorrow my day consists of going to UTD for a couple hours and receiving an A for 50% of my final project grade in my HP class. Don’t worry, I’m not being overly confident; we get the A just for showing up, no test or anything required. So, not only did I have a class where the majority of the work was reading fun books, I also get As without having to take any test. Yep, that was a pretty awesome class to have this semester.

Northrend Won’t Have a Clue

May 5th, 2009

After I finished recreating my WoW UI today, I decided that I was done with playing my alts for now and that my main character deserved a little love. Therefore, I actually went back to playing new content rather than content that I’d already been through at least 2-3 times before. It is slightly annoying for leveling to go so much slower, but there was progress made (to 74) which at least gave me a sense of accomplishment. Getting to 80 soon would be nice, but I still feel no major rush since the only thing left would be to start raiding once again.

Progress is progressing nicely with my projects, although primarily the work today was focused on the P2P one. Stuff in the GUI is now threaded (generally), so the program won’t say “Not Responding” when in fact it really is. Just a couple of visual tweaks are left, and then I should be able ot shift most of my attention to the documentation effort.

An Automagic Fix

May 4th, 2009

So, that issue I was having last night with my project? Turns out my computer just felt like giving me a hard time because when I tried it again tonight (after having gotten no response from my group), the issue wasn’t happening anymore. Yeah, I have no clue what was going on there. Anyway, I’ve now moved on to other bugs, so as long as it continues to work, I guess I’m fine with that.

Even though the food was just as bad as the football banquet (Blue Mesa), the baseball banquet was overall much more fun and entertaining. We still don’t know when the next time is that we’ll be able to play, but hopefully it should be sometime next week. Next Tuesday would mark three weeks since our last game, so it’s probably a very good thing that it’s a game with absolutely no bearing on our playoff status.

The Bug Waiting Game

May 3rd, 2009

Just because you’re nearing the end of a project doesn’t mean that there are fewer bugs that need to be dealt with, but it does mean that when said bugs fall outside of the realm of what you’ve coded, it’s more likely that an email to your group is in order. From the time that the email is sent to either receiving a reply and/or the bug getting fixed, there’s not a whole lot that can be done. Now, fortunately I just have a whole second project I can jump over to be working on, but otherwise I’d become extremely unproductive.

Tomorrow marks my last day of classes but as has been very well established, not the end of school for me. So, I forsee Tuesday and Wednesday actually being useful days for me for once. At least once I won’t have completely worthless things to say about them, but I still view them as totally unnecessary and a  general waste of time.

Above and Beyond

May 2nd, 2009

I finally finished up reading Deathly Hallows earlier tonight (since I had a week or so of projects and needing to read Wicked), and I’ll probably go back and read Chamber of Secrets just so I can say that I read all of the books this semester. I’ve done a significant amount of the reading using PDF version on my computer, so this has definitely convinced me of the nicities of eBooks. Hitting a key on my keyboard is much nicer than having to turn a page and hold a book in such a way so that you don’t have to reposition your hands to see all the words on a page.

I spent a couple hours this afternoon hooking up a new computer for Brandon’s mom, and I’ll be going back tomorrow afternoon to finish the job. She decided to go with a Mac mini, so I had the pleasure of learning all of the built in Apple apps “on the job” as I explained how to use them. Hopefully it’ll just be intuitive enough for her, and I won’t constantly have to field questions that I have no idea what the answer is.
