Dabbling and Doodling

February 8th, 2009

In an attempt to help Andrew study calculus, we’ve been trying out some online whiteboard programs so that I can draw out graphs and explain them to him (or complex formulas that don’t translate well into AIM). The first one ths these we tried had significant lag and was quickly disposed of. The current one we’re testing out is entirely web based and is actually somewhat decent, with the major problems coming from our inability to draw worth anything. Andrew only has his mouse to use; I at least have my tablet, but it’s not exactly a piece of hardware that I’ve become an expert at using.

I hoped that I would never have to deal with the atrocious progam that is Visio again, but it is recommended that we use it for doing our diagram for the first phase of our database project. It is nice in the fact that it creates a way to make database tables and link them together with relationships, but it can also be a pain to adjust things without needing to dive into 4 levels of menus or dialog boxes. I consider our relationship to be a purely professional one; once this project is done, Visio shall never see the bits of my hard drive for as long as I can manage that.

An Indicative First Day?

February 7th, 2009

Hopefully not all baseball games this season will be as…eventful as the one today. I can’t really remember the last time I had to deal with an injury on the field, but today I (just I) had to deal with both a bitten cheek and a sprained ankle. Hey, I might be a trainer, but that doesn’t mean that they need to give me actual work to do!!

Tomorrow, outside of playing ultimate in the afternoon, is primarily a homework day for me. Top priority on that list would be doing my database class project and starting to read the next Wizard of Oz book. I actually have very little work this week to do on my big project class since Friday is our demonstration day for the first stage/milestone, and we’re (surprisingly?) well positioned for that even right now.

A Final, Last Day of Freedom

February 6th, 2009

Tomorrow morning I have to be at HP at 11:15. This is to some extent an arbitrary time (and also the “latest” I need to be there), but I don’t feel like going at 9:45 for a 15 minute breakfast when I don’t even eat breakfast. That just seems like it would be an extrodinary waste of otherwise good sleeping time. Two (and more often than not, three) days of my weeks now get to be spent sitting outside. As long as outside chooses to be warm those days, my issues shall be minimal.

As for the rest of my weekend, I now need to actually think about doing homework. Another book to read and projects to work on gain the distinction of generally what I’m going to be doing all semester long. At least it’s better than what some of my alternatives could be: writing research papers, drawing circuit diagrams, and/or coding in assembly.

Moving on into Oz

February 5th, 2009

In my Wizard of Oz and HP class we’ve now finished both the first books and corresponding movies. Now, while I’m quite familiar with HP as a whole, I know nothing about what Baum wrote about in the other 13 or however many Oz books he wrote. So, seeing as how our next book for that class is The Marvelous Land of Oz, I’ll be reading something entirely new. Not to say that what we have been reading is in any way boring, but I know the story of Sorcerer’s Stone pretty well, and even though the book was different from the movie, The Wizard of Oz was still familiar enough.

Rather than watching a bunch of Alias tonight, I’m busy working on project related things for my class tomorrow. None of what I am aiming to get done seems to be hard, but everything always looks like that until the bugs creep in. Hopefully I won’t have too many of those so that I can go to sleep in a good mood and not cursing at C# under my breath for making my life difficult.

No Need to Duplicate Our Work

February 4th, 2009

So I found out yesterday that one of the big portions of the game event this year was actually already being done by the school just a couple of weeks later. So, rather than basically have the same thing twice, we’re going to focus more on promoting the school’s event and postpone that part of ours to happen in conjunction with it. Ideally this will make logistical planning easier on me, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see exactly how that works out.

Considering that I’m very “off” of gaming at the moment, now would actually be a great time for me to satisfy my desire to try out Linux again for a month or so on my computer. If I do, I think that I’d probably try something besides Ubuntu to just have a little variety in my experiences. Considering that I’m quite happy with Vista and fully plan on moving to 7, I don’t see myself abandoning Windows forever though. Not to mention the fact that I’m going to be working at Microsoft, so I’ll be more familiar with the workings of Windows than I probably ever have been before. :)

Jumpstarting My Microsoft Knowledge

February 3rd, 2009

For my CS project class, we’re using .NET/C# to implement it. In my database class, we’ll be working with SQL Server 2005/2008. I don’t even work for Microsoft yet, but half of my classes this semester have me using their products. Guess it’s not a bad way to become intimately familiar with the products of the company I’m about to go work for, huh?

Assuming we don’t have a freak ice/snow storm overnight, this week will only be the second of the semester where I go to my MW class both days of the week. (Un)fortunately I only have one so it’s not like I’ve missing some great amount of work each week. Now, if there was only a way for heat waves to somehow get classified as inclement weather, then we’d really be onto something for not having to go to school five days a week…

Getting Onboard the eBook Train

February 2nd, 2009

With Austin and Park City looming within the next two months, I figured that it would be nice to not have to carry books around with me in order to get all my reading done. Therefore, I downloaded an app onto my iPhone that basically turns it into an eBook reader. I grab e-versions of the books I need to read, throw them on my phone, and I can basically read anytime, anywhere. In my car, on a bus, up in a plane…you name it. I probably will pass trying to read while snowboarding down the side of a mountain though.

Part of the beauty of my schedule is the fact that while I can “wake up” semi-early, I can also stay in bed for quite a while. Case in point, I have my alarm set to go off at 9:00 every morning. Now, it normally goes off, I hit snooze a couple times, then I get bored of that game and go ahead and turn the alarm off. I don’t actually get up right then though, but I can rest and stay in bed for another good 30 minutes to an hour if I want. I was telling a friend that while I had to go to school 15 minutes later in the day than he did, I also got to start about 5 hours later. I think I’ll definitely take my schedule over his.

Television Overload

February 1st, 2009

There was a little thing called the Super Bowl on TV today, but that wasn’t the only thing I watched. I finished up the second season of Alias also (the only season I knew the ending to prior to starting to watch the series), so I’d put my total TV watching today at around 5-6 hours. For those of you who wish to tell me to get off of my butt, I also went and played ultimate for about two hours also. Happy? Good.

This week should be pretty standard for me (although five days of school might be pushing it a little) up until Saturday which is when baseball will start. I still haven’t figured out when I need to be there yet, so that’s something that I need to remember to do this week. Fortunately there’s no bus for me to miss though, so in case I forget, I know I can just show up and people will be there.
