Never, Ever Enough

August 31st, 2008

HP did win last night (45-26), and there was a big celebration at the stadium once we got back with pictures, trophies, and cake. Just because we were the first to reach 700 doesn’t mean that anything is going to change; we’re at the top of the area rankings at the moment, and my guess would be that we intend to stay there. Another undefeated regular season would definitely help in that regard, but it’s the 5-6 games after that which are arguably the most important.

I have a significant amount of homework due on Tuesday given that I only have two classes, so my time tonight and then tomorrow is going to be be partially spent working on that. I don’t intend on waiting so long this week to finish up my Gaming Narrative document for this week, so my goal for that is to be done by Tuesday night or at the very latest Wednesday afternoon. The cycle probably gets to repeat itself next week, but I don’t want to (and in some classes, can’t) get super far ahead on my homework. Why spend the extra time now when it could be distributed over a much longer period?

Believed to be Necessary

August 30th, 2008

With the game starting at 8 and an insanely long first half, now is the best time for me to get in a post. We should win if the game keeps going like it has been. A celebratory post will have to wait for tomorrow.

The good part about this weekend is that I still get two full days off. Granted, I’d still basically get two days even with a non-holiday Monday, but having it offical just makes it special. I’m all about the special, if you didn’t know.

Completely Out of the Park

August 29th, 2008

For lack of a better term, I completely owned the math section of the GRE today. My verbal score of 540 (out of 800, like the SAT) could have been better (although you try finding the antonym of a word you’ve never seen before when all of the answer choices are also words you’ve never seen before), but I’m happy enough with it. Math, however, couldn’t have been any better. Yep, I made a perfect 800 on that part, and if I had to choose one to do better on, I’m glad math was it. Granted, those are “unofficial’ scores, but since it was all computer graded, I don’t really forsee them changing any. I’ll get my official score report in a week or two with my writing score, and then my score report gets sent off to different schools around the country that hopefully want to give me money to go to graduate school there.

Tomorrow’s game (at 7:30, not 8:00 — schedule change once again) could potentially give HP its 700th all time win, a mark never reached by any school in the state of Texas so far. We thought that we were tied with Amarillo at 699 going into the State game last year, but apparently they only had 698. Good for us because it gives us a chance to reach that milestone alone, but there’s more to this season than just reaching 700 wins. Another state championship perhaps?

The Unexpected Indeed

August 28th, 2008

As if on cue from yesterday, the unexpected happened once again today. When I got to the stadium about 2:50, I was informed that I actually wasn’t going to be travelling to Red Oak this evening but instead staying at the high school and helping there as originally planned. That was great and all, but unless I wanted to do a whole bunch more mindless driving (which I didn’t), I had about two hours to kill at the stadium before any sort of preparation for the games was going to take place. As a result, I was recruited to help with setting up for the varsity practice and I then went and killed some time by bothering the baseball players while they did their off-season stuff. Always an adventure, that’s for sure.

So, with my GRE tomorrow, I’m going to be doing some last minute studying for it tonight. The software they provide still sucks, but it’s at least manageable. I may take it twice like I did the SAT because even without doing any additional prep, my SAT score jumped 70 or 80 points the second time I took it for no apparent reason. Who am I to argue with results like that??

Expect the Unexpected

August 27th, 2008

Today right after my 5:30 class started, I got a call (although my phone was in vibrate mode, so no worries) from the trainers. Apparently tomorrow, rather than having games at HP, I’m going with Coach Harris to Red Oak for most likely two games. Fortunately I have nothing else big tomorrow so that’s not a huge problem, but it definitely wasn’t what I would have expected in a phone call from them. So much for not traveling this season!!

I’m debating the best way to deal with handle keep track of everything that I have due since over half of my classes only meet once per week. Right now I’m going old school with a UTD weekly planner book (all of $7 at the bookstore), but I may end up doing something with my iPhone. If I could connect just the calendar my Google account I have set up for my UTD email, then that would be a very potential solution. If I put an email account on my phone though, I’d prefer not to deal with doing account switching between mail and calendar. You’d think the iPhone would be smart enough to handle that though, right? The other option is that I could always pay $99 for a year of non-functional MobileMe.

A Lawyer Without Law School

August 26th, 2008

One thing I discovered this afternoon at the CV meeting (not as a part of the meeting, but talking to one of my friends beforehand) is that I can apparently become a lawyer without needing to bother to take the LSAT or even go to law school. Yep, all I have to do is take the bar exam for patent law once I graduate from UTD and I can become a full patent lawyer. I may or may not actually decide to do it, but it’s at least an interesting option to have.

Tomorrow my main goal will be to finish up my game doc for Gaming Narratives, and then after the games on Thursday I’ll focus totally on reviewing for the GRE. Granted, I still expect to have no problem with the math, and the reading probably won’t matter one way or the other, so really the writing prep is the only thing I expect to really gain from it. Hopefully if I ever decide to do some law prep. the review software will actually be designed for a somewhat new OS.

Mondays are Pretty Worthless

August 25th, 2008

If today’s class could be any sort of overview for the remainder of the semester, having to go to UTD on Mondays for that one class will not be the shining point of my day. I don’t think that I’ll dislike it necessarily, but I definitely don’t expect it to rank near the top of my favorite classes this semester. That said, I don’t plan on skipping any either because I’d much rather be there and at least be somewhat forced to learn than to just blow it off entirely.

I spent an hour on the phone tonight trying to troubleshoot networking issues that one of my friends was having, and after trying everything I could think of or find online, it still wasn’t solved. His next step was to call the person who came out and set up their network for them originally since he didn’t feel like talking to a guy named George who was AT&T tech support in India. Can’t say I really blame him there; I try to solve everything I can via email for that specific reason.

The Big Ninety-0

August 24th, 2008

That’s right fellow readers, spiders, and spam bots, this is post 900 in the long, boring history of my post making. No celebration necessary, feel free with continuing your interesting lives uninterrupted. After all, what would we celebrate? The fact that I can actually do what the title implies?

I intend on finishing Fellowship of the Ring tonight seeing as how I don’t have anything to do until 5:30 tomorrow. That’s going to be very nice this semester, since I’m basically going to get an entire extra day of weekend on top pf my 3 day weekend already with the exception of that one class. From start to finish, my school week doesn’t even last 72 hours. Now that’s what I call awesome.

WoW Takes Precedence Over Movies

August 23rd, 2008

Last night I watched the first disc/half of Fellowship of the Ring, and tonight my plan was to watch the second. Well, that plan stayed on the table until I started playing WoW, and now that’s been delayed until at least tomorrow night (since I don’t have to wake up early Monday morning, go my schedule!!). Passive entertainment versus active entertainment; I think I’ll go with the active one.

I downloaded the prep software for the GRE this afternoon only to discover that they can’t be bothered to update their software from being written from Windows 95. Therefore, instead of doing (part of) one of the practice tests, I had to go get my leptop, install it on there, and make sure that it worked. So, rather than install a VM on my desktop and go through that hassle, I just went to a computer that would natively run it. Sometimes my resourcefulness is just scary…

A Long, Ultimately Fruitless Day

August 22nd, 2008

I slept until about 11:30 this morning knowing that I’d be draining all my energy at the scrimmage today, and I was right on that count. I’ve basically done three things today: eat lunch, go to the scrimmage, and shower once I got back home. No other games, virtually no TV (outside of eating lunch), and nothing productive was accomplished. I’ll aim to be slightly more productive this weekend, but hey, it is the weekend after all, so I can’t become too productive or else it ruins the whole weekend part of it.

That productiveness will most likely come in the form of writing for my game class and doing some of the reviews for the GRE. I have no other homework to do, so I can spend the rest of the weekend being very unproductive and just play games or whatever. Write, review, rest; my three ‘R’ sounding words for the next few days.
