Beginning of a Mini-Movie Review Avalanche

July 11th, 2008

This afternoon I went by Blockbuster twice (the twice was necessary because I forgot my wallet the first time) and rented three movies for me and my parents to watch over the next couple days: Vantage Point, 10,000 BC, and Enchanted. Now, I saw the latter in theaters and have already done my review on it (and as I correctly predicted then, a rental list movie). We watched Vantage Point tonight (review forthcoming later in this post), I’m going to see Journey to the Center of the Earth tomorrow, and then probably tomorrow night we’ll watch 10,000 BC.

As for Vantage Point, it was a movie that I actually had wanted to go see in theaters but never got around to it. I had heard that it had gotten generally negative reviews (as so many movies do that I like), but I actually find it to be quite good. If I had seen it in theaters originally it would have made my purchase list, so it will very likely get included with one of my upcoming Amazon purchases. My score: 8.5/10.

The Weekend for All Intents and Purposes

July 10th, 2008

So tomorrow might just be Friday, but as far as I’m concerned, it’s the start of my weekend. I’m not going to work tomorrow, I have nothing else that I *have* to do, so I’ll probably just spend the day resting and playing games. Ahhh… weekends.

A movie could still be in the cards for Saturday, but that’s a pretty typical event for a weekend anyway. Still unsure on which movie it would be, but seeing as how I’d have all of my restful tomorrow to figure that out, I don’t see it as an issue. So, with all that said, I shall continue to start my weekend early by playing, you guessed it, WoW.

All That Matters in the End

July 9th, 2008

I got an automated email today saying that a course grade was ready for me to view, and my GPA got increased all of .001points with my A from Japanese. It doesn’t really matter how good or bad my paper was or how well I did on the assignments and tests when all that I really care about is the final grade being an A. I’ll put grades above actually learning something anyday since I can go teach myself whatever I want whenever I want, but I can’t really give myself whatever grade I feel like and have it mean anything.

As far as the rest of my life goes, there’s not too much to discuss. I probably will be starting on part 2 of my SE project this weekend just because of the amount of work that’s going to need to be going into it, and I’ll be one person doing it instead of the 4 that everyone else has. A movie on Saturday is also likely; either Kung Fu Panda, Get Smart, or Hancock would be my best guess.

Half of a Summer, All of a Class

July 8th, 2008

I emailed my Japanese teacher my paper earlier this evening, and with that I’m done with one of my two summer school classes. The other one doesn’t continue on past the end of this month, so I’ll have all of August to myself until school starts on the 21st, about 2/3 of the way through the month. Not a bad deal, although I wouldn’t mind starting a little earlier if it meant no reading days and being done with exams before December 18th.

Tomorrow I’ll probably be uploading over a gigabyte of video to YouTube for a friend (to his account, not mine), and it really makes me wish that YouTube had a batch uploader. Alas, I’m going to have to upload each clip individually and wait for it to finish transferring before doing the next, so I guess I should be quite happy for my super fast fiber upload speed so that my internet isn’t completely dead for the couple of hours that’s probably going to take to do. That’s what WoW is for though, right?

Paper in Progress

July 7th, 2008

My goal is still to finish my Japanese paper before I go to sleep tonight so that my mom can proofread it tomorrow and I can send it to my Japanese teacher by tomorrow night. I’ve taken care of another big project that I wanted to get done today earlier this evening, so really the only thing for me to do between now and going to sleep is work on my paper. In one way, that’s a good thing since it can receive all of my attention. The bad side to that is that it’s almost bound not to, and since I have nothing else productive to get me distracted, I’m more likely to be entertained while I’m being distracted and waste time doing things that I shouldn’t.

One thing that probably would be a “good” distraction is getting more of my Japan pictures up onto Facebook, but that’s not all that likely to happen tonight. That probably won’t happen until later on in the week, and even thing, I have to fight distractions such as WoW and other games. Fortunately WoW isn’t an issue for me tonight since I played it quite a bit during the day today and accomplished enough to make me quite happy with myself. The fact that the server I play on will be down until 1:00 tomorrow afternoon also means that I won’t mind going into work with Mr. McDonald.

Arkansas and Azeroth Can Happily Coexist

July 6th, 2008

Well, a long weekend away from Azeroth apparently isn’t enough to unaddict me as I spent a couple hours this afternoon on WoW working on one of my alts. Andrew and I had a discussion before I left about my take on grinding and why I didn’t enjoy playing D2 online, and that really is one of the big reasons behind the creation of my alts. Even though I may want to participate in the endgame content, getting ready for said content is really just a lot of “grinding” (although not as boring as in the traditional sense possibly) to get the gear necessary in order to not die. In case you weren’t aware, not dying is a good thing.

I did actually start on my Japanese paper (I know!), and just because of my schedule for the rest of the week, I’ll probably try to get it finished tomorrow. I have the outline already done from when I had to give my speech while I was there, so now it’s just a matter of elaborating on it and finding the sources to cite so that I can make a good enough grade on it to keep my A in there. Wikipedia is actually quite useful for things like that; even though teachers say that you can’t cite Wikipedia articles in your papers, the external links section usually provides some very informative sites that are acceptable for citing.

There’s Something About Arkansas

July 5th, 2008

No kidding, I’m about ready to go to sleep again way earlier than I’d ever think about doing so in Dallas. Does this means that I’ll turn off the lights and have visions of sugar plums dancing in my head at the very moment I publish this post? No, probably not; chances are I’ll turn off my computer and then play Crisis Core or Secret Agent Clank some. Tomorrow morning we’re leaving about 9:30, so assuming that it takes us the same amount of time to get back home as it took us to get here (which unless the world has gone wacky in the last day, it should), I’ll be back in Dallas around 2:00.

So, tomorrow as a day will be pretty worthless for me, but it’ll at least give me a chance to start on my Japanese paper that I didn’t start today nor do I really expect to start tomorrow on the way home. Monday afternoon could either end up being just a one hour trip to HP or a full afternoon of doing stuff with the friend whose house I’m going to, so fortunately I don’t have any other plans for that day. Tuesday work and class, Wednesday work, and before you know it, my life is back to normal.

Riding in a Car Can Become Quite Tiring

July 4th, 2008

So tiring, in fact, that I’ll probably be going to sleep early tonight. Yeah, I can’t explain it either, but that’s what appears to be the case. Granted, I think I’ll finish watching the episode of Heroes I started before actually going to sleep, but the fact of the matter is that it’ll still be early.

So far Office Depot and Lowe’s have been put on my grandfather’s and my agenda for tomorrow; my dad may or may not choose to tag along with us. Either way, there’s bound to be a couple more stores that get added (including a place that involves food around lunch time). I would make a case for Backyard Burgers, but since there’s one of those in Dallas now, we might as well go to a unique place that can’t be duplicated four and a half hours away.

Preparing for the Much Shorter Trip

July 3rd, 2008

Tomorrow morning at 9:00 (so claim my parents) we’re going to leave to go to Arkansas to visit my grandparents until Sunday. We used to go about six times a year (let’s see… Spring Break, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas), but for the past few we’ve only made 1 or 2 at the max. Partially this was because of all of sport stuff going on at HP (and then my subsequent volunteering for the same sport stuff). So yeah, I’ll be posting from the road the next two nights, but there won’t be a category or anything to tag those posts.

My Japanese paper is due a week from today, so I’ll (hopefully) be working on that some over the weekend. I’d like to say that I’ll work on it in the car, but we all know that I’m really just going to be watching torrented TV shows the ride there and sleep some maybe. Tomorrow will probably be a fairly boring day, and then Saturday my grandfather and I will probably go visit our normal stores, even though I don’t really have anything that I need to buy. Well, I do actually need some small binder clips, but that’s a whole different story…

The Second Most Uneventful Day of My Life

July 2nd, 2008

Honestly, I have no idea where today ranks on that scale. The only reason I put second was because today is July 2nd, and I was aiming for some sort of wordplay in the title. Yeah, that was the best I could come up with. Shows you what kind of day I’ve had.

There shall be no movie tomorrow, as I will be finishing up my SE project. I’ve made a good amount of progress on it, but I still have to go through and mock up every single UI screen anyone will see. Hopefully that’s easier done than said because I really don’t want to have to make all those screens one by one. Reuse and similarities will be quite prevalent if I have anything to say about it.
