Good to Have Free Time

May 31st, 2008

It was slightly strange to not have any baseball this weekend, but fortunately that gave me all the time I needed to finish moving all of my stuff out of my apartment at UTD. After about an hour of throwing a bunch of stuff away and transporting everything else to my car, I turned in my keys and won’t ever have an apartment there again. If I do, something has gone horribly wrong with the world.

I did the transportation section of my research assignment today, and I got to satisfy my OCDness for a good 30 minutes, especially since so many sources didn’t agree with one another. I ended up going with stuff from the official site of the transportation system, so if that ends up being wrong, I can’t really claim it was my fault. I’ll probably take the PDF of the whole transportation system on either my phone or my N800 just so I can have something portable to reference, but my guess is that the signage at the stations once I’m there should be more than sufficient.

A View to an End

May 30th, 2008

Tomorrow marks the last day I’ll have an apartment out at UTD, so a potion of the afternoon will be spent moving the rest of the stuff from my room to my house. I’ll probably make that an early afternoon job so that I can make sure to return my keys to the leasing office before they close (although I’m pretty sure if they’re closed I can just drop them into the drop box). The funny part is that as far as I’m concerned, I haven’t had that apartment for the last month or so, so while this is an event that one would think I’d be excited about, it’s all very anticlimactic.

My OCD gets to be put to good use this weekend for one of the assignments in my Japan class. We all have been assigned one of the locations that we’re going to and need to write up a short paper about it including, you guessed it, directions on how to get there from our hotel. I’ve actually been looking for some type of software for my phone that I could install and make use of the GPS chip to help me not get lost, but I haven’t turned up too much yet. Oh well, it’s not like its absolutely necessary or anything, it’d just be something potentially useful to have available.

Trainer not Included

May 29th, 2008

One of the captains to be of the baseball team next year asked me this afternoon where he could get some prewrap and tape to use for over the summer. Being the very knowledgeable trainer that I am, I told him just to go into the training room and take what he needed from the scrap basket that we keep full of tape that still has some left on it but isn’t enough to keep on the tables whenever we restock them. I just hope he realizes that he’ll be doing his own wrist jobs since there’s no trainer included with tape gathered from the scrap basket. :)

Apparently I’m the only person in the world to not have heard “Bad Touch” back when it was extremely popular, as everyone who I’ve mentioned it to has known about it already. It’s a strange song, but then again I wouldn’t expect much else from a song that I heard in the baseball fieldhouse. For comedy songs I think I’ll stick to Weird Al; songs like “White and Nerdy” are much more up my alley.

The Right Time for OCD

May 28th, 2008

Way back before I even considered having a blog that I’d update every day for more than a year, my parents, grandparents, and I went to Las Vegas (hint: this is two times before we went for my birthday this past December). We stayed at a wonderful hotel called The Mirage, and my grandfather and I walked up and down the Vegas strip where we ate at a wonderful place called Fatburger. On the way back, we were almost to our hotel when we came to the corner of Caesar’s Palace. Our hotel was only the next one down, but Caesar’s had such an inviting moving walkway going into it, how could we resist? After all, we knew that there was an exit from the Forum Shops right next to an entrance to The Mirage. Oh what fools we mortals were…

Basically, my grandfather and I got lost in the shopping area of Caesar’s Palace for 45 minutes before we were finally able to find the exit that we were looking for. Granted, they have a large interest in getting you lost and keeping you in the hotel, but ever since then I’ve used that as an example of how easily I can get lost in a completely brand new place. Well, if I’m going to Tokyo in a couple weeks where there are no dead ends to tell me that I went the wrong way and to start over again, I want to try to get it right the first time. Therefore, for the past hour plus I’ve been researching everything I can find out about the path I need to take from the airport to the hotel. There are two different rail/subway systems involved and also walking down a street for a little ways, so I think the better prepared I am, the better off my sense of navigation be. After all, if I get lost, I don’t think screaming “Necesito ayuda!!” is going to help too much.

Not Too Many of These Days

May 27th, 2008

Only two more actually, but that’s actually a very good thing. My entire day was pretty much non-stop, and then when I got home, I had very little free time due to needing to make some flash cards for the Japan class. Thursday and next Tuesday are the only remaining days like that that I have though, so I think I can manage.

It’s been a long time since I’ve made flash cards for anything, but I’m sticking with the techniques that served me quite well in Spanish for quite a few years. Hopefully I won’t have too many to make due to how time consuming (and tedious) they can be to create. I have the index cards for quite a few more though, so that shouldn’t ever be a limiting factor in the number that I can do.

Movieless

May 26th, 2008

There will be no movie review today, and I wanted to make sure that I explicitly pointed that out lest it be thought that I just forgot again. Today was instead spent at home virtually the entire day either playing WoW or watching TV. Not a bad way to spend a holiday if I may say so myself.

So, while my body is going to have its internal clock all screwed up this week, the real calendar says that I have both of my summer classes tomorrow. This equates to me leaving my house around 10:00 and not getting back until 8:00. Granted, the reason being for this is that I’ll be going to work with Mr. McDonald in between my two classes; I’m not actually in school for 10 hours straight. I couldn’t handle that even when I’m supposed to be in school, much less when it’s summer.

Key in Hand

May 25th, 2008

I’m now one step closer to the “endgame” in WoW since I finally got my key to be able to go to Kara. Now my last thing to do is just work on upgrading all of my gear, and once I have that done, I should be good to go. Granted, by the time I have that done, it’ll almost be time for me to turn around and head to Japan, but at least I’ll be ready for when I get back.

Tomorrow I might be going to see Indiana Jones, but I’m not sure yet. My grandparents are coming over to our house for lunch, and there’s been some discussion of going to see a movie but nothing decided on yet. It’ll probably be really crowded tomorrow which would be a strike against going, so we’ll just see how things play out. There might be a movie review tomorrow night, or there might not.

No More Conflict

May 24th, 2008

Apparently it just wasn’t meant to be this year either. This afternoon we lost 5-11, and thus the baseball season for HP came to an end. As far as my schedule goes, this was the prefect week for this to happen; as far as everything else, another two weeks would have been desirable.

I don’t think my mind has any idea what day it is, and the fact that Monday is a holiday really isn’t going to help matters much. I have classes this week Tuesday-Friday, and then next week only Monday-Thursday. So, two 4 day school weeks before my trip to Japan, and then when I get back, I’ll only have to go to UTD on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. I really doubt that you’ll see anywhere near the number of complaint posts over this summer as there were last year.

Don’t Know What To Do Without You

May 23rd, 2008

I finished up the first season of Chuck earlier this afternoon, and now that I don’t have any episodes left to watch, I feel an empty place in my life. Granted, it will be an empty place probably filled up very quickly by WoW (since that’s what it actually displaced in the first place), but now I’ll just have to wait until the fall to get more of my Chuck fix.

HP won 6-1 tonight in Waxahachie, so no physicals tomorrow for me. Instead, my assignment is to be up at the stadium at 11:30 for a 12:00 bus trip to a 2:00 game that should be over around 4:00 getting me back to the stadium approximately 4:30-5:00 and then home by 5:30 or 6:00. Tomorrow night my parents and I will likely watch National Treasure 2 which I got on DVD this week. That pretty much takes up all of my tomorrow, but I’m sure I can find something else to talk about in my blog post tomorrow.

From PDF to Printer

May 22nd, 2008

The Japanese class teacher sent out an email earlier today with the reading list for each lecture and a link to the online location where all of the non-book material can be found. Seeing as how there are two things listed for tomorrow’s class (both of the online variety), I figured it would be a smart idea to print out both and read them, you know, before class tomorrow. Alas, the reading shall have to wait for a little while longer, as I feel another episode of Chuck in my future before starting on those.

Tomorrow may be a phone post day, but I don’t really expect it to be. Unless the game goes way long or something else delays our return, I should be home in plenty of time to make a post tomorrow. Ideally it will be a post saying that we play Saturday at Coppell, but nothing is guaranteed.
