A Phone Call is Worth a Million Emails

February 29th, 2008

In attempting to set up times to speak with people at USC about the programs I’m considering applying to, my emails fell on deaf screens as I never got a response after having sent messages a couple times. When I picked up the phone and called them, however, I had my message returned within 24 hours. I’d think that they would probably rather communicate with me via email, but I guess not.

While today wasn’t that bad, tomorrow is going to be quite busy. I need to be at HP around 9:45, and we have 12:00 and 6:00 games in Fort Worth. This gives us four hours between games to kill, so it seems that we’re going to eat somewhere for at least part of that time. A bunch of the juniors aren’t going to be there for the start of the first game since they’re taking the SAT tomorrow morning; we play in the 6:00 championship game regardless, so I’m not actually sure of the purpose of the 12:00 game. Then again, since when has baseball made sense?

Only Half a Hectic Friday

February 28th, 2008

Mr. Barrows emailed me this afternoon saying that he wasn’t going to be at HP tomorrow, so that leaves me no real reason to go up there in the morning. This means all sorts of things such as me getting to sleep in and not having the insanely stupid HP-UTD-HP schedule. Tomorrow will be a late night, so not having an early morning kind of offsets that in the balance of my life I guess.

I started Devil May Cry 4 technically yesterday, but since I only did one mission and the game is very deceptive about its saving pattern, I had to restart it this afternoon. Therefore I’m claiming today as my DMC4 start date, and hopefully it’ll entertain me enough to play it through to the end in a relatively quick fashion. I say this because Mass Effect is staring at me from the shelf, and on the chance that I like it, it could potentially be a big time sink. Amazingly enough, I haven’t played WoW at all since I regained control of my life earlier this week. All the time where I basically just couldn’t play it got me unaddicted enough that I haven’t really felt the need to log on recently. My subscription renews mid-month so I still have a couple weeks to decide on the renewal issue, but for now I’m quite content being WoW-less.

The Post That You Deserved Yesterday

February 27th, 2008

Man, am I glad that I didn’t decide to play another round of UT3 when it was 11:53! I didn’t even think about making a post until I glanced down at my watch and saw it was 11:58. I have no idea what triggered the thought or why I forgot in the first place, but I now present to you what my post from yesterday should have looked like:

I’m free!! I found my test this morning to be easier overall than the first one which is saying something seeing as how I got a 92 on the first and probably spent less time reading/studying for this one. The half-alpha presentation went fine; we appeared to be about on track with the other groups which was slightly surprising, comforting, and worrying all at the same time. Surprising since I figured the other groups would have more done, comforting since that meant we didn’t stick out as being behind the curve, and worrying since the amount of work left for us to do is probably the greatest out of any of the teams. I came up with the idea of forming personal schedules to help keep us on track, and I wouldn’t be terribly shocked if we decided to shrink the scope of what we’re trying to do a tiny bit by next Tuesday.

So if that was yesterday, what was today? Well, up until about 2:00 is could be described as “relaxing”; after that it was “crazy, insane hectic, Jeff has way too much to do”. What happened was that the stuff I was going to get printed this evening and send out tomorrow for the game event got printed, stapled, and shoved in envelopes by 4:30 only to find out that the mail at UTD gets picked up at 3:30, not 5:00. So, my relaxing day didn’t really need to be interrupted, so I’ll aim for a total relaxing day again tomorrow. Maybe eventually I can find one.

Free at Last

February 26th, 2008

I’ve been so free, I almost missed this post! We won the baseball game 14-0, I have no HW due tomorrow, and I’ve been playing UT3 since I got back. Want to know anything else? Wait until tomorrow!!

Don’t Bother Me, I’m Coding (or Studying)

February 25th, 2008

Well, I got my prediction about today right. Ever since about 4:00 I’ve either been working on the game project or at a review session for my test tomorrow, only taking a break for the past 15 minutes or so to take a shower and make this post. I’m going to attempt to finish up the game project before I go to sleep, but if that doesn’t seem like it will be at a reasonable hour, I’ll go to sleep around when I normally do and then just wake up a lot earlier. Almost there though, I’m almost there.

I honestly don’t even know when my next assignment is due after tomorrow, but I’ll be perfectly fine if it isn’t until after spring break. Considering my spring break is now less than two weeks away I guess that’s not saying all that much, but after the February I’ve had, I think I deserve it. Now, if only there were a way to add a few days in between today and tomorrow…

Entering Turn Four

February 24th, 2008

All the work that I’ve been talking about for the past month finally comes to an end on Tuesday. I have my Automata test tomorrow morning, and then the half-alpha of our game project is due on Tuesday right after my Ed Psych test. I’m going to have so much free time compared to what I’ve been having (Austin trip excluded) that I’m not sure I’ll know what to do with myself. Some WoW will probably be in order seeing as how I don’t even think I’ve logged on for close to two weeks, and I’ll probably get back to games like Kameo that were temporarily put on the back burner.

Granted, getting all of that work done is no easy task. The studying /reviewtime for my two tests must be shared with finishing up the half-alpha, so I expect the next 36 hours to be quite busy. Isn’t that really the only fitting way to end all of this though? I mean, if I made this huge deal about the amount of stuff I had due and then at the end there’s no big climax, it just doesn’t seem to put the final point on everything. Today didn’t turn out to be that bad like I was predicting yesterday; unfortunately that probably means that tomorrow will be even crazier.

Back to the Real World

February 23rd, 2008

The tournament is now over with two additional wins this afternoon (in much more comfortable weather) increasing HP’s season record to 5-1, and I’m back in Dallas/Plano needing to worry about things like like tests next week and the game project that’s due on Tuesday. Tomorrow is probably going to be an extremely busy day for me, so some form of a rant tomorrow night isn’t out of the question.

Two weeks from now I’ll be on another trip; I’m going to LA to visit a friend and look at USC as a potential graduate school. That should just about do it for my traveling in the near future. No promises that nothing else will magically appear, but if it’s not planned by now, it’s probably not going to happen.

My First Real Mobile Post?

February 22nd, 2008

Posting from my phone is probably going to be easier than stealing internet access from the Hyatt next door. This isn’t to say that I couldn’t post from my computer, but webpages actually load faster on my phone. Just think how efficient I would be with a 3G iPhone…

We won both games tonight, 13-3 and 7-2. Our games tomorrow are actually earlier than I thought they would be, so that means I should be back in Dallas with plenty of time to post from my house. All that work, and I’m only really ever taking advantage of it once. So sad.

An Internet Stealer Am I

February 21st, 2008

Just because I didn’t need to use the ability to post from my phone today doesn’t means I won’t need it tomorrow or Saturday. Even though our games ran about an hour late (due to starting an hour late), I’m still comfortably within my timeframe for posting today. The title for this post comes from the fact that even though we’re staying in the Embassy Suites (a Hilton hotel), I’m on the Hyatt wireless from the hotel next door since I can actually pick it up from my room (and the wired charge is $10/day).

Our record for today was 1-1; we lost the first game 2-4 and then won the second 5-3. I’m not really sure what the agenda for tomorrow is, but I know our games are once again (theoretically) at 5:00 and 7:30. The team is having a meeting downstairs later tonight, so I’ll probably figure out at least the schedule for the morning then.

Probably a Good Idea to Test Beforehand

February 20th, 2008

Considering that one of my methods to make sure I can post from Austin is dependent on sending emails from my phone, I figured it would be a good idea to test it at least once before I’d potentially need it. So, as I sit on the couch outside of my room writing this, I’m hoping that it’ll just work or else I might be troubleshooting for a while tonight. Once I see if this message goes through, I’ll finish this post from my computer.

Well, it seems like it worked!! Making posts from my phone is obviously not going to be my first choice, but in the case that I either don’t have internet access or won’t be at my computer in time to make one, I now at least have a backup plan in place. Take that, Austin trip; you shall not foil my posting plans after all!!!
