All You Gotta Do is Tweet, Tweet

May 31st, 2007

In my slowly but ever expanding amount of social networking sites that I join (first Blogger, then del.icio.us, then Facebook), Twitter can now be added to the list. I had heard about it before and thought it was a pretty stupid concept (short phrase, mini-blog updates about what you’re doing throughout the day??), but I realized that a problem existed which I needed a solution to. Next week, assuming we go to Austin, I would be away from a computer for long enough that I couldn’t update this blog daily. No, I couldn’t do the same thing as I did with the trip to Tyler because on Saturday the last game isn’t until 7:00, and driving back from Austin would get me back to my house post-midnight. Unwilling to resign myself to having to end my streak, a little bit of quick research showed that I could use Twitter (which I can update from my phone) in conjunction with a Wordpress plugin to take my “tweets” (as they are called) and generate a post summarizing them. It’ll probably take some tweaking to get it the way I want, but it’s definitely doable.

Before jumping ahead to that, however, we have our baseball game tomorrow. It is no longer in McKinney but has now been moved to Colleyville Heritage which is just on the other side of DFW Airport. Still a short bus ride, and the schedule time-wise didn’t change at all. Really nothing to complain about there, but that definitely can’t be said for all the changes that have happened in the past (*cough* Abilene *cough*).

Better or Just Less Boring?

May 30th, 2007

Now that I have my computer and with the arrival of the third intern yesterday, life at Rockwell Collins has gotten slightly less boring, but I’m not ready to say whether or not it’s any better. I still don’t love the project I’m working on, I still do get bored at various points throughout the day, and I’m still going to be very happy when August 10th arrives.

I played WoW for a little bit this afternoon, but I then spent almost 3 hours playing a full (normal) game of Civ 4. There’s a second expansion coming out for it this summer, and while I haven’t even bothered to pick up the first, I could see myself getting both at the same time. My favorite Sid Meier game is probably still Alpha Centauri, but Civ 4 definitely battles for second place (mainly against Civ 2).

One Game Between Us

May 29th, 2007

One game, Friday night, McKinney Field, 7:00. That’s all that stands between us and the state tournament next week (or more specifically, next Friday and Saturday for Class 4A). According to my intel, we lost the coin flip and that’s why it’s a single game series; Poteet knows that their chances of beating us goes down if it is a best of three series.

I can already tell you that this week is going to be a good one. Why? Well, I’ve been thinking it’s Monday all day, which means that this trend will likely continue until Friday, which I’ll think it Thursday. Then all of a sudden, *BOOM*! It’s the weekend!! Of course, it’s worse when it’s the other way around (you think it’s Friday but it’s really just Thursday), but I don’t get confused that way too often.

Summer Grabbed Away

May 28th, 2007

This day off came at a really inopportune time for making me want to like my internship better since I’m going to want tomorrow off also when I wake up (actually, I want it off now, but the feeling will be stronger right after I wake up). I did a little bit of research today over the technologies I think I’ll end up using, but it’s still probably going to end up being “research and code” almost every day. Not saying that’s a bad thing, but that’ll likely be the way it ends up working out.

No news as of yet on the baseball schedule for this week, but if I had to guess, I’d say one game on Friday and then a DH if necessary on Saturday. For location, maybe Dr. Pepper, maybe Allen, or maybe just home fields. Fortunately, I don’t think Abilene will be entering the picture anywhere. If I don’t hear anything from one of my friends during the day tomorrow I’ll call Coach Gibbins to get the scoop.

I know that I said I would try to make a vlog post each week, but I’m trying to work up a way to make the volume sound better. It may not be that noticeable on the first video, but I was talking fairly loud and even then the volume level was below what I’d call average. Just rest assured that I haven’t abandoned the concept and there will be one forthcoming before too much longer.

Deep in the Heart of Texas

May 27th, 2007

Well, I predicted it right yesterday; we got back to the stadium about 12:30, so had I not posted earlier, there would be no more streak. We arrived at Abilene so early that the game before us was just starting when we pulled up to the stadium, so after a 3 hour bus ride there was another 2 hours of sitting and doing very little else. Once we got our game started though, there was very little to be concerned about as we run ruled Brownwood 12-0. Trust me, I won’t be emotionally heartbroken if I never find myself in Abilene again in my life.

This next week we play against Poteet, and the little I heard regarding it was saying that we’d virtually have to self destruct to lose to them. Granted, we did lose once to them earlier in the year, but that was part of a 4 game losing streak and only the first time ever they’ve beaten us. I’ll probably know the game schedule tomorrow or Tuesday, and after that it just becomes working it into my daily schedule.

Post from Afar

May 26th, 2007

Well I sure didn’t see this one coming. No longer do we play tonight in Weatherford or even Waco. No, we’re playing at 7:00 in Abilene. So, this post is being made from the HP Training Room seeing as how I won’t even be back at HP until probably 12:30, much less at my house in time to make a post. I can be quite resourceful when needed, and this qualifies as one of those times.

Free for Three

May 25th, 2007

No more internship until Tuesday because of Memorial Day, and believe me when I say that I’m not sad about that fact. Maybe next week will be more interesting with a computer to use for the full week that doesn’t need constant maintenance and updating, but it’s more the work right now that just doesn’t interest me in the slightest. 10 weeks, I can manage, but it probably won’t be the happiest 10 weeks of my life.

Tomorrow I’m supposed to be up at HP at 11:45, and assuming the rain doesn’t choose to interfere again, we’ll play at 4:00. If it does rain, we’d probably have to get an extension from UIL and play on Monday which would (assuming we win) make next week extremely interesting. I’ve heard that it’s already been decided next week would be a single game though, so that might just be a Saturday game. One thing I’ve learned is to never try and guess what anyone is going to do just because you think it’s logical because the world just doesn’t function that way.

I’mmmmmm Safe!!

May 24th, 2007

Well, the weather can be thanked for this streak continuing, but it didn’t arrive before we actually went down to Waco (not Weatherford which was absolutely going to get pounded by the storms) and sat around in the dugout for about an hour and a half. Therefore, I got to spend over 3 hours on a bus today. At least we watched the first Pirates movie for entertainment on the way down (and finished it at the start of the trip back up). The new schedule is a single game series on Saturday in Weatherford at 4:00.

Right before I left Rockwell Collins today, my computer finally arrived. The joy of that, however, was short lived when it became apparent that I couldn’t install anything (or at least the two pieces of software that I need to), so I called in a support ticket and then left. I’ll find out tomorrow morning if that problem has been solved.

This Might Be It

May 23rd, 2007

The streak might just end at 32. As I said yesterday, we play in Weatherford tomorrow at 7:30, so with the game over at around 9:30, an approximately 90 minute drive back to HP, and then time for me to get back up to my house, I may just miss posting tomorrow. I could make one right as I wake up (that would be an exciting post) or when I am at my house in transition to going to HP (more likely), but I haven’t decided yet. This could be a very big decision.

I still have no computer at my internship, and I probably won’t be getting one tomorrow morning either. Maybe Friday, maybe not, but Monday is a holiday (yay!!) so I get a quick revert back to summer. All I have to say is that next year I’m being much more picky with my internship offers unless this one starts to get better really fast.

31 and Going Strong

May 22nd, 2007

Wow…31 (as of this post) straight days of posting. That’s a month. Compare this to two years ago when I’d go up to two weeks without making a post. How the life of The Daily Goob has changed. I think it’s the rhythm I’ve gotten into of making a post every night before going to sleep (with the few notable exceptions I plan ahead for). Sooner or later something is going to disrupt the flow, but for now, I might as well enjoy the ride.

The second day at Rockwell Collins was less reading and listening but not really any more fun or entertaining. Maybe once I actually get a computer and get to do more work than writing stuff on a whiteboard the entertainment factor will pick up, but so far I’d choose working with Mr. McDonald hands down. Just 11 more weeks, just 11 more weeks…

Baseball this week is Thursday and Saturday in Weatherford, so nothing all too exciting there except for an approximately hour drive. Actually, running a Google Maps search from HP to Weatherford shows the time as 1:20, so with traffic it’ll probably even be slightly longer. Whoever came up with the idea of putting DVD players on buses was a smart, smart person. On our Saturday trip to Tyler we only really had a DVD to watch on the way there, so I might take a couple just in case no one else thinks to bring any.
