Posting Gets Stuff Done

June 30th, 2006

Well, who’d of thought that after posting yet again that I hadn’t put up the pictures of our HP house, I would do something as radical as finally upload them and set up a gallery. See that link called “Photos” up next to “About”? Click that and you can see my massive set of albums (1) with pictures. Of course, some of my photos are still on Flickr and I need to decide how I’ll split those or whether to migrate completely to one or the other, but at least those are up now.

More unpacking occured today along with a trip down to HP and UTD. Slowly but surely my stuff is getting out of boxes, and my goal is by the middle of next week to at least have everything unpacked and in a temproary place. That’s when all the rearranging starts to find the layout that works/looks best.

Delmar, Stanford, Tipperary: 3 Cities, 3 Houses

June 29th, 2006

Well, we’re officially moved out of the second house I’ve lived in, 2715 Stanford. We made some final trips over there today to collect items that hadn’t been put in boxes and weren’t transported over yesterday, so now (hopefully) everything that we want is in this house now. If not, well, tommorrow would be one of the final days to go retrieve it.

Noticed how I said we were “moved out” of Stanford but not “moved in” to this house (Tipperary) yet. That’s because at the moment there are still boxes all over the house, both packed and unpacked, and probably will be for at least the next few days. I won’t go on a picture spree of this house until most everything has been unpacked/cleaned, and I still have yet to put the pictures I took of our other house online yet.

Short and Sweet

June 28th, 2006

To compensate for the fact that I didn’t think I would be making a post today, I’ll keep this short and to the point. All of our furniture got moved today to our new house, but some stuff (like my computer) stayed behind until later tonight for a final trip once more stuff was in place. Hopefully I’ll have internet tomorrow to write a post that goes into more detail, but for now time to pack up and go…”home”.

And in Case I Don’t See Ya…

June 27th, 2006

…Good afternoon, good evening, and good night.

I watched The Truman Shownot all that long ago, and this just seems so fitting as this is my last post that will be made from HP for who knows how long. I still have a little more stuff to pack, but almost everything is ready to go for in the morning. Tomorrow if going to be super tiring with essentially all of the day driving between houses and shuffling/unpacking boxes, but I guess that is the definition of moving.

I expect to have internet access back by Thursday assuming all goes well with Verizon, and hopefully next week things will begin to settle down. My goal (which yes, I know I failed at yesterday) will still be up update daily, but that’s always a toss of the dice with me. And that, blog readers, is all he wrote.

3 Days Left

June 25th, 2006

72 hours from now for all intents and purposes I’ll officially be living out in Plano. We don’t officially sell this house until Friday, but Wednesday is when all our furniture (including beds) gets moved, so that’s a pretty good reason to start living in our new house. Not everything will be hooked up by then (as outlined in my last post), but hopefully it won’t be too inconvenient.

Why I Will One Day Rule the (Technology) World

June 24th, 2006

Ok, I know the chance of the situation in the title of this post is next to impossible, but I’m not one to back down from a challenge. Everyone thinks they have the next big idea, and some do; not everyone can be right though, so having enough “next great ideas” means your chances of hitting on one of them is better. Now, perhaps the title is misleading, as it implies that I’d explain in this post some of these great ideas. Not happening.  ;)

If I was ever given a shopping spree and able to spend whatever I wanted, chances are I could bankrupt a few small countries. With that in mind, I add the next item to my ever growing shopping list:

  • FusionHDTV5 RT Gold – While looking through some of the documentations on our new house, apparently there’s a TV antenna either in some attic or actually on top of the house, which means I could use that in conjunction with an ATSC tuner card (antennas (antennai? antennae?) don’t really care what they recieve) to at least set up a HDTV PVR system using one of my 4 computers until Tivo gets off their lazy butt and releases the Series3.

Comcast and I are mortal enemies, I hate them to my very core, and the second there’s a non-satellite alternative to them, I’m going to pressure my parents soooo hard to switch. Verizon might end up being the alternative with their FiOS TV service (which has launched in some areas but not Plano yet). My reluctance to go with a satellite provider is that they have yet to standardize on something similar to the Cablecard that would allow other devices (read: Tivo Series3) to record all the available channels from them without having to control a set-top box as an intermediary. I’ve said before (although maybe not on here) that I absolutely love Charter (our cable provider here in UP) as they’ve never been anything buy helpful. Comcast, on the other hand, uses this spawn of the devil A/B line system in both Plano and Richardson that makes it essentially impossible to connect a Tivo to cable and get the standard 2-99 channels without a cable box.

In the less full of hate world of my life, today we started moving boxes into our new house. Up until Wednesday that’s probably all I’ll be doing, and then Wednesday it’s arranging stuff once the movers have moved our furniture, Thursday Verizon is coming to connect our phone and internet service, and somewhere in there I have to get on contact with Comcast for a 3rd time to try and get cable service hooked up. Comcast, take note: infuriating someone who already can’t stand you isn’t the best way to gain new customers. (And this paragraph was supposed to be hate-less, oh well…)

The End is Near

June 23rd, 2006

Well, we now own our new house and could start moving stuff into it as soon as tomorrow evening. My computers won’t be moved until next Tuesday or Wednesday, then Verizon hooks up our new internet service Thursday, so I’ll only be without an internet connection for 24-48 hours max.

I’d like to add this to the list of my shopping items that I posted yesterday:

  • Sandisk 1GB Memory Card – Since the 6682 is a camera phone (which I don’t have right now), having the memory card to store more pictures on and also copy over a few select songs for times I wouldn’t have my iPod with me will be a definite plus.

Still more stuff to pack, so that’s what I should probably go do (even though chances are I won’t).

Very Temporary Restraint

June 22nd, 2006

Because of my pending address change, I’ve been hesitant to order anything online recently. Generally there shouldn’t be any problems, but in case of the odd shipping delay, I just wanted to play it safe. What this means though is that I have a list of things that I want to order very soon after we move and start to unpack everything. For those of who interested (which is no one, but I digress), the list is as follows:

  • Sennheiser PC 150 Headphones – The current set I use for my computer is the free one (Logitech) that came with my UT2004 Collector’s Edition, and while they’re ok, it’s obvious that they are pretty cheap.
  • Adda AD2512LB Case Fan – Because of the PSU I got for my computer the fan at the top of my case doesn’t fit, and there’s a side mounted one that sucks in air from the expansion card area and out the back of the case that I’ve never used due to it being horrendously loud (not a size/speed issue, but that something is wrong with it).
  • Nokia 6682 Phone – I’m most definitely ready for a phone upgrade (having gotten my current one at Christmas of 2003), and the Nokia 6682 is what I’m thinking will be my new one.

Then of course there are the other items on my wishlist but that I’m not ready to buy yet. These include the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet, Toshiba Gigabeat S, and (instead of the 6682), the Nokia N80 Phone. Yes, it would be fun to be rich so I could just buy everything I wanted, but that’s still a few years off for me. ;)

“The Highland Park of Plano”

June 21st, 2006

My mom used that quote yesterday in reference to Willow Bend, the area of Plano that we’ll be moving to. For those of you who have no idea what Willow Bend is like, well, that quote is a pretty accurate statement. Granted, I would much rather stay in the real HP, but I guess the Plano version works too.

Aside from continued packing, nothing else of note happened today. I think I found a solution to the wireless issue with our new fiber connection, but I’ve learned not to take anything for granted with networks until you’re done using it, as just getting it set up and working is no guarantee.

The Final Days

June 20th, 2006

The movers come a week from tomorrow to essentially move everything of ours out of this house and into our new one. I’m still making progress on getting all of my stuff packed up, but I would like to point out that I am making progress even though much of what is going into boxes wasn’t visible in the first place (being under my bed, in my closet, or up on shelves that no one ever noticed). Our new (fast) internet service will be hooked up next Thursday, so that means we won’t be without net access for too long. The one caveat is that the router has to be mounted fairly close to the terminal box which I think will be in the garage. If the wireless works throughout the house then I guess that’ll be fine, but I see needing to set up an access point up where the HDTV and stuff will go to reach up to my dad’s study especially.

The Mavs lost both Game 6 and the series tonight, and the strange thing is that I don’t think anyone saw this result after we went up 2-0 in the series. Oh, and I saw Nacho Libre today. This is one of the very few movies I’ve seen recently that I would have possibly walked out in the middle of had I been there by myself. Now, we’re not talking The Village bad, but definitely not good. 4/10 rating, max.
