Going an entire school week (Monday-Friday) without internet access is not the most fun way in the world to live. But, it’s working now (although who knows for how long), so I won’t complain too much for the time being. Since I never posted the results of our Grand Prarie Tournament…
Grand Prarie Tournament Results:
(Game 1) vs. Duncanville: L 4-7
(Game 2) vs. Lake Highlands: L 3-4
(Game 3) vs. Sweetwater: W 8-0
We played Naaman Forest on Tuesday (L 8-11), but I wasn’t at that game. I was at the Music Hall at Fair Park watching Hairspray which was entertaining, but not good enough to make it into my top 10. We then played our first district game this evening against West Mesquite and won 12-0. No for 5A teams to worry about, so let’s hope we can start a new winning streak.
Current Record: 11-5 (1-0)

I think the general consensus is that we wish we would have done better than 1-2 in our tournament this weekend. We lost on Thursday and Friday to Duncanville and Lake Highlands respectively and then finally got a win today against Sweetwater. Our last regular season non-district game is Tuesday against Naaman Forest, but I won’t be at it because I’m going to see Hairspray that night.
Since we didn’t have any games tonight, I had the time to watch The Incredibles on DVD. As I said when I initially reviewed the movie, Pixar knows how to make movies fun and entertaining the entire way through. Of course, my favorite movie of theirs is still Monsters Inc.

Another win yesterday for the Scots with our 14-3 victory over North Mesquite. Starting tomorrow we have the Grand Prairie tournament for the next few days with our first game at 7:00 PM tomorrow night. You know you want to come watch us, right?

First the announcement (which has nothing to do with GDC): One of the tech newsletters I subscribe to has a short editorial at the top of every one before the reviews and other articles. The editorial in question here is this one which talks about AOL’s Terms of Service Agreement that everyone using AIM has agreed to accept. I highly recommend reading it (only 5-6 paragraphs), but the short version is essentially that anything you say or send across the AOL network can be used by AOL in any way that they want. If you use AOL/AIM, be careful what you say to other people if you have any intent on wanting to keep that information private.
Now, on to what I found important that occured at GDC this week. By far I found the most interesting thing to be the keynote speech by Nintendo. 3 huge things were announced: 1) Nintendo is launching its plans to take the DS online within the year via any wireless hotspot, 2) “Revolution” will have built in Wi-Fi for online gaming (theoretically) at the beginning of it’s life and will also be backwards compatible with all Gamecube games, and 3) a new trailer for the Gamecube Legend of Zelda was shown. As far as I can tell, Nintendo knows that they did somet hings wrong this generation to compete with Sony and Microsoft and plans on coming back full force.
Microsoft’s keynote also provided a bunch of hints about “Xenon”. First off, Microsoft is making a huge push for HDTVs in the fact that the native resolution will be a widescreen aspect ratio (likely 16:9). Whether or not this will speed up the adoption of HDTVs or simply reduce the sale numbers of Xenon because fewer people with regular TVs decide to buy it is yet to be seen. A new UI is being developed that will allow for better Live integration across all games and also will provide for custom soundtracks in every game. Xbox hasn;t been my favorite console this generation and Xenon probably won’t jump to the top of my list, but Microsoft definitely has some interesting ideas as far as their next console goes.
The non-game related news is the new technology that Dolby has developed for playing 5.1 audio over any set of stereo headphones. Don’t believe me? Here’s the link to Dolby’s site and their interactive demo. The great part about this is that it’s software based so games being developed for existing platforms (although generally handheld) will be able to take advantage of it, very important seeing as how the DS and PSP have just launched within the past 6 months.
Finally, an interesting link I found: del.icio.us — I would have never thought of making a URL into a word. In reality, the site has nothing to do with being delicious, but is a “social bookmark” manager so you can keep track of and categorize your bookmarks online and even see who else has bookmarked the same sites (via a URL hashing method). I personally haven’t tried it out yet, but I liked the idea so I figured that I might as well include it.

Our game at 9:00 this morning was against Sachse, the team we beat 11-1 last week. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the luxury of a 10 run margin today. We did manage to win by 1 run though, 4-3. That put us in the championship game with the opportunity to win our own tournament (something that hasn’t happened that past few years supposedly).
This game was against Rowlett, and to make a long story short, we scored 4 runs while they got 0. Yes, we got 1st place and extended our winning sterak to 8 (should be 9…..stupid weather). I’m slightly tired of baseball now, but there’s only 2 days before our next game and then another tournament next weekend.
Tommorow will be the GDC review day. For the two people who probably ever read this, definitely a bunch of interesting announcements, including one non-game related piece of information that could very likely push sound to a whole new level.

I don’t have any hard statistics, but today’s game was definitely the biggest win that I’ve ever experienced in my 4 years of being on HP baseball teams. We won this morning’s game 23-2 (yes, that’s correct) including 10 runs in the top of the first inning. We now play at 9:00 tomorrow morning (so much for sleeping in on the last Saturday of Spring Break) and then either at 4:30 or 7:00 tomorrow night depending on if we lose or win that early game, respectively. Come out and watch us (hopefully) win our tournament!!

We had 2 games today in the Scotland Yard Classic. The first was against Frisco Centennial which we won 8-0 and the second was against North Lamar which we again won 3-2. To be honest, I’m really surprised that I keep updating this with our latest baseball info. Tomorrow we only have 1 game (which due to the number of teams in our tournament is being played at Hillcrest), and Saturday is up in the air for both number and times.
Sometime before school starts back up, I’ll make a post discussing my thoughts on some of the announcements at GDC along with a few other random things thrown in. Most likely this post will happen Sunday so I can go ahead and dedicate a full post to it instead of including it with one of my baseball posts because, if you hadn’t noticed, so far I’ve stayed to a 1 post/day format and don’t plan on breaking that anytime soon :).

Of our regular season, anyway. Yep, we managed to finish this one without lightning, rain, or any other evil things that cause games to be cancelled. 11-1 isn’t too bad I don’t think. Next up is the HP Tournament next Thursday-Sunday which, of course, is right in the middle of our Spring Break. Some people are going to the Bahamas, a few are going skiing…and me? I get to visit a great place called Dallas, TX (check my profile for the irony).

If I haven’t completed more games in the first two months of this year alone than I did in all of 2004, I have to be getting fairly close. Star Fox: Assault is the newest game to be added to the completed pile while Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is now in my GCN and ready to be completed over the next week or so. At least, I hope I can beat it that fast. Still a bunch of games left to go…
Our game vs. Hillcrest tonight got cancelled after we had already finished 3 full innings because of ongoing lightning delays and an imminent storm that would have probably made the field to be unplayable. Should find out tomorrow if that game will be rescheduled or not.
Oh, and one last thing. I have a certain friend that never likes to use spellcheck or proofread what he writes, so this was his slogan for a short period of time up at the top of his blog: “I’ve been told I needed a blow instead of ranting to friends” — Some people never learn :)
