War of the Websites: Blogger vs. Xanga

January 2nd, 2005 @ 3:27 PM

I honestly would not be surprised is over 75% of our school has a Xanga account for their blogs. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with this, but why did everyone flock to that site instead of Blogger? Granted, I’ve never had a Xanga account (nor do I see myself having one in the near future), but the features that it has over Blogger seem pretty trivial. Let us count:

  1. Now Playing/Watching Entry – Almost as bad as the IRC scripts saying what MP3 you’re listening to on Winamp, but it doesn’t even work with Firefox (yet). Interesting idea, but the plugin bar at the top of the screen gets kind of annoying.
  2. Blogrings – This is the only feature on Xanga that I wish Blogger had. Even better, a 3rd party cross-site service needs to be developed.
  3. eProps – Who really needs a fake money system tied to the comments on posts?

The reason why I figure everyone went to Xanga is because the people that began to make this “popular” used Xanga, and in order to try to be like them, everyone else began to join that site. Maybe I’m off, but that’s the only big reason I can figure why I’m the lone Blogger in our school.
