Series of Unfortunate Events vs. Harry Potter

December 28th, 2004

After having read the first 5 books of the Series of Unfortunate Events series, I began to make comparisons in my head between it and the Harry Potter series. The first thing I noticed was that I like the HP books much better — I think they are written better, more entertaining, and overall the better series. That said, however, the SoUE books (that I’ve read anyway) are still good books and fun to read (much shorter also), but they just lack the “draw” that the HP books have. If a SoUE book was 700+ pages long, it would definitely take much more effort to finish it than Order of the Pheonix did.

On the movie side of these two series, the entertainment value is extremely close. Even though there as only been one SoUE movie compared to 3 HP movies, I definitely think the two are about equal. In fact, I personally liked SoUE better than the most recent HP movie simply because I’ve read Prisoner of Azkaban and believe that too much of the book was left out of the movie. So, if you like the HP movies, definitely go see SoUE. Just don’t expect the same level of quality to come from the book series.

Not an Unfortunate Movie at All

December 18th, 2004

The newest movie based on a book series for kids came out yesterday, A Series of Unfortunate Events. Just because of the type of movie and the fact that it’s based on a book series, it is inevitably going to be compared to Harry Potter. After seeing it yesterday, however, I can definitely say that this movie is on the same level as the HP movies and (without spoiling anything) is just as entertaining.

Recipient of “Christmas Movie of the Year”

December 4th, 2004

Now that I’ve seen both The Polar Express and Christmas with the Kranks, I feel like I can pass judgment on which of the two is the better Christmas movie for this holiday season. Even though Christmas with the Kranks is very funny overall, I think that The Polar Express does a better job of actually telling a memorable story and manages to keep your attention better, so it wins my award. Both movies are worth seeing, but only Polar Express will be added to my DVD collection. Movies still on the list to see from now through the end of the year are: A Series of Unfortunate Events, Ocean’s Twelve, and Finding Neverland.

Oh yeah, and Christine wanted to make sure that I pointed out she thought my previous post with all the “touching” references in it sounded very sexual :)
